Mother essence: Original flower essence water preserved with equal parts alcohol (50/50) or apple cider vinegar. (See the following note.)

Stock bottle: One to seven drops of the mother essence in a new solution of equal parts water and alcohol (50/50) or 100 percent vinegar.

Dosage bottle: One to seven drops of the stock essence in water. To be taken as drop dosage immediately (within two to three weeks of bottling). If you want to preserve long term, add up to 50 percent alcohol or 100 percent vinegar.

General dosage: Two to four drops (from stock or dosage bottle) up to four times per day in water or directly on the tongue. You can also massage the essence directly onto your skin. (The wrists, heart center, and temples are lovely places to try.)

Preserving with Vinegar: If you are avoiding alcohol, you can preserve your essence with vinegar. Because vinegar is less shelf stable than alcohol, I recommend keeping any vinegar-preserved flower essences in the fridge. Mother essences stored with 50 percent vinegar may last as long as three to six months in the fridge. I recommend making stock and dosage bottles with 100 percent vinegar (plus the drops of your essence). At this ratio, your vinegar-preserved stock and dosage bottles can last many years when refrigerated.

Note on toxicity and scarcity: If diluted properly, all flowers are theoretically safe to make and take as an essence. But please use caution when working with flowers that have known toxicity. Please also exercise thoughtfulness and restraint with any flowers that are rare or endangered.
